The Four Legged Race
Yesterday's adventure was The Four Legged Race - 9km of trail running as part of a 4 person team doing the annual "Four Legged Race" at Clevedon. As the name implies, the race involves 4 legs - a 17k kayak, 9k trail run, a horse ride and a 22k mountain bike. Our kayaker, John Quirk (who had kayaked in the Commonwealth Games a few years back, and who is an accomplished adventure racer) had a good paddle, and came off the water in 6th place. I pegged back a couple of more places on the run to put us in 4th. Run time was 57:18 for the 5th fastest run time of the day. The run was up and over a farm called Woodland Stud, and there were some tough technical sections through native bush along and over a river and up through pine forest, and some long climbs. Our rider, Charlie Sellar, pegged back one more place on the ride to put us in 3rd going into the MTB leg, but then our biker Simon McLean punctured not once but twice, putting him and our team out of the race. Bugger! Back next year for another attempt.
